FINDING A LAWYER
A personal referral is the best way to find a lawyer who meets your particular needs. If your relatives, business associates, or close friends cannot recommend a lawyer, the local and county bar associations in Connecticut provide a public service know as Lawyer Referral Service (LRS).

WHAT IS LAWYER REFERRAL?
Lawyer Referral Service is a way to introduce you to a lawyer who can answer your questions about a legal problem. It is a non-profit program sponsored as a public service by your local bar association. The service is designed to assist people who have a legal problem and wish to consult with a private attorney but do not know whom to call.

Lawyer Referral Service is different than Legal Aid, which is a service that assists individuals who have limited financial resources. If you cannot afford to pay for legal services, there are several Connecticut organizations that provide free legal assistance if you meet certain income provisions. The Lawyer Referral Service can give you the name and telephone number of an agency that can help you.

WHO CAN USE THIS SERVICE
Residents of New London County, Connecticut who need an attorney and do not currently have one.

HOW DOES THIS SERVICE WORK?
Please contact LRS at (860) 889-9384 or send an email to [email protected].  The service will then contact an attorney who has agreed to accept cases in your problem area. Someone will get back to you with the attorney’s contact information and you may call the attorney to schedule a consultation. It’s as simple as that.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
The Lawyer Referral Service will charge you $25.75 to cover the cost of the referral, which will be electronically collected at the time of your referral.

Some legal problems cannot be solved by merely consulting an attorney. Many consultations result in future legal proceedings. If further services are necessary, you should first decide whether or not you wish to retain the referral lawyer. The charge for further service will then be determined by agreement between you and the lawyer. Please be advised there are no pro bono (free) or income-based attorneys participating in this service.

WHAT SHOULD YOU BRING WITH YOU TO YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT?
You should bring any papers related to your problem. Also have the names and addresses of any persons or businesses involved in your problem. Remember that everything you tell your attorney is confidential.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF USING LAWYER REFERRAL SERVICE?
Through the services of a local bar association, you can find an attorney who will help you solve your legal problems. All attorneys registered with LRS are in good standing with the Connecticut bar.
